Pink gold, much more than a trend

Rose gold, much more than a trend

Have you ever admired a rose gold wedding ring in a place other than a photo? By the way, are you familiar with rose gold? You're probably laughing at my question, but many people don't know that rose gold exists. In fact, it exists but not in a natural form. It is an alloy or, if you prefer, a homogeneous mixture. The gold that we call pure, that of the great rushes and the Klondike, is indeed yellow.

Pure gold, graded at 24 carats, is too malleable to be used alone in jewelry. Just one blow and your jewelry would be deformed. To fully understand where rose gold comes from, you must understand that all jewelry, whether it is yellow gold , white gold or even red gold (And yes!) contains other metals in varying proportions. These mixtures are called gold alloys and depending on the grade of your jewelry - 10, 14 or 18 carats - the quantity of these metals varies. An 18-carat rose gold jewel is made up of 75% pure gold compared to 25% other metals, hence the name 750 thousandths gold.

In the case of pink gold, the metals copper and silver are added to obtain the pink color . Thanks to this addition, it is given greater resistance and gold, a biocompatible metal due to its high chemical inertness, compensates for the oxidation of other metals. Rose gold is one of the precious metals that oxidizes the least and is difficult to scratch. It's the best of both worlds, after all! Rose gold is said to be romantic and feminine. That being said, more and more men are choosing rose gold jewelry . Plus, it suits all skin tones. Add diamonds or any other precious stones and you get a breathtaking result. 14k rose gold engagement rings have been gaining popularity for several years since the pink color is well balanced and the jewelry holds up well to the activities of daily life.

If you like saturated colors and your budget is limited, you will surely be happy to know that 10k rose gold tends towards dark pink due to a greater amount of copper in the alloy. Unlike yellow gold which sees its yellow become richer as the quantity of gold increases, pink gold sees its pink color soften. The only downside in the equation is that a greater presence of copper in the alloy could cause an allergic reaction.

A Brief History of Rose Gold Jewelry

The story goes that St. Petersburg jeweler Pierre-Karl Fabergé was the first to introduce rose gold into these famous eggs designed for the Russian royal family. Was this gold alloy created by accident to solidify his masterpieces or was he really looking to acquire a new shade of gold? The fact remains that the popularity of pink gold, formerly called Russian gold, quickly crossed borders to reach its heyday in the 1920s thanks in particular to Cartier's “Trinity ring”. Subsequently abandoned in favor of platinum, 18-carat rose gold jewelry regained its popularity after the Second World War when platinum, used massively in the war effort, became rarer and cost much more.
