Sizing a ring

The steps of a ring change Size
- In cases of shrinkage and enlargement of the inner diameter, the ring body must be cut with a bocfil, a saw designed for fine jewellery work.
- A piece is removed to shrink and added to enlarge the ring. In the case of adding points to the ring, the metal can be white gold, yellow gold, rose gold, silver or platinum depending on the composition of the ring itself. One dot of Sizecorresponds to a 3 mm metal rod.
- The ring is reshaped with a flat self-closing pliers and then coated with a solution called flux which will let the solder flow without forming a clump.
- A weld is made at high temperature at both junctions using a torch and an alloy called solder.
- The ring is soaked in a deroch, a mixture of water and sulphuric acid, to remove the glassy effect of the flux.
- A measurement is taken on the caliper to check the new ring size.
- If no further adjustment is required, the ring is filed, ground and finally polished before being cleaned in the ultrasonic.
