Comment reconnaître une vraie perle d’une fausse?

How to recognize a real pearl from a fake?

History of real pearls

The cultured pearl and the fine pearl are real pearls. In both cases, a mollusc, such as an oyster, creates the pearl by covering with nacre an irritating foreign body found inside its shell. When the introduction of a foreign body results from human action, we speak of a cultured pearl . When the pearl is produced spontaneously without human intervention, it is called fine. This is much rarer and, moreover, more expensive. Fine and cultured pearls are, depending on their origin, the color of pearly ivory, champagne or pink. Tahitian pearls have the particularity of being black. Freshwater pearls are cultured pearls raised in lakes or rivers. Traditionally, these grow without a core and are often made entirely of mother-of-pearl. In appearance, they more closely resemble natural pearls.

Fake pearls

Faux or imitation pearls can be made of glass, ceramic and even plastic. They are generally used in making costume jewelry and can easily pass for the real thing. Their prices vary but they are generally very affordable. They certainly have their place on the market but be careful not to pass themselves off as real ones. There are simple tests that allow ordinary people to differentiate real pearls from fake pearls.

Battery of tests

  1. The first test you can do to make sure you have a real pearl is to gently rub it on the sharp part of your tooth. If the contact is slippery, it's a fake. With a real one, you will feel rough edges and a slight squeal. A real pearl should have a rough consistency.
  2. Secondly, rub two pearls against each other between your fingers. If they are real pearls, you will feel a slight friction since their surface is not completely smooth. If a light powder breaks off and spreads on your fingers, there's a good chance it's mother-of- pearl.
  3. Like a snowflake or a fingerprint, each pearl is different and has small imperfections in its shape. If the pearls you are analyzing are perfectly round and similar, there is a good chance that they are artificial.
  4. Finally, test the sensation of cold to the touch. Take a bead that has not been in contact with a warm body for a while and notice its temperature. If it's a real one, the pearl is cold and will take some time to warm up between your fingers.
