The different types of chain links for jewelry
Is it difficult for you to recognize the different links in a chain and their respective names? It's normal! This is even true for us who work as jewelers. There are so many types of chains, so many types of links that we must constantly refer to identification catalogs. The idea of this article is to simplify your searches by focusing on the main channel types.
Types of chain links
Whether for an ankle bracelet, wrist bracelet, necklace or pendant, the idea is to make a wise choice on the chain link you need. Each type of jewelry chains can have different thicknesses. Here are the most common types of chain links.
Curb Knit
Curb link is usually a type of men's jewelry chain link. It is the classic of classics with its simple flattened links which follow one another. Some consider it too traditional but this type of chain link remains a must. Massive chains are more expensive, especially gold ones, but they resist the hazards of everyday life. This type of chain supports heavier pendants well.
Figaro mesh
Also called the alternating curb chain , the Figaro mesh is similar to the curb chain mesh since it is also made up of ventilated rings. The big difference of this type of chain is that an elongated link is inserted after three short links. Also considered more masculine, the Figaro chain offers massive or semi-massive link types that we strongly suggest for its strength and durability. The Figaro silver chain for men is probably one of the most popular in the world.
Jaseron mesh
Known in Quebec as the rolo mesh , the chain link is a simple but effective type of chain link. Small round and oval stitches are linked alternately for a sober and delicate result. This type of chain is well suited to children because its thinness does not prevent it from being solid. Jaseron meshes are also known as Belcher meshes.
Mesh Forçat
Inspired by prison chains, the convict chain is made up of links with rounded or square corners. It’s our favorite at Flamme en rose. Feminine, resistant and timeless, this type of chain link accompanies the majority of our pendants. The chain that we particularly like is the 1.2 mm diamond convoluted link.
Venetian mesh
Since it is made up of cubic links that fit together, the Venetian chain is also called a cubic chain. This type of chain link does not go for frills but the chain remains elegant whether worn fitted to the neck or lower.
Ball Chain
Generally semi-hollow, the ball chain, as its name suggests, is a succession of balls connected by small rings. Feminine, it stands out above all for its versatility than for its look. The type of chain with the smaller beads of 1 and 1.5 mm is worn lower down with a pendant. Beads larger than 6mm create a very interesting effect near the neck. Made famous by its extensive use in the US military, the ball chain also goes by the name GI's chain.
Cuban Knit
Legendary on the hip-hop scene, the Cuban channel has held its Latin name for several decades thanks to its popularity among Cubans in Miami. The Cuban chain features oval links that intersect in a rope pattern, much like the curb chain but tighter. Usually handmade and very solid, it combines tradition and modernity. The type of mesh can be worn as a necklace or bracelet and its thickness can be up to 21 mm.
Palm tree mesh
Spiga chain , wheat chain , palm chain; three names for one and the same type of chain link. Making this type of jewelry chain is very complex and requires a lot of technique since each link is connected to the penultimate. The palm tree mesh requires high quality metal so that the braiding of threads can be resistant. The Spiga or palm tree chain is usually more expensive but its value is highly deserved.
Mesh Rope
The type of rope mesh is easily identifiable precisely because the chain resembles a braided rope. Less common but just as pretty as other chains, rope mesh unfortunately tends to age less well because it is empty from the inside. It is difficult to repair for this same reason. The twisted rope chain goes very well with a round pendant.
Navy Mesh
Marine knitwear draws its inspiration from the chains that hold boat anchors. Each oval link is crossed by a rod in the center which gives it foolproof solidity. It is very popular with children.
Coffee bean knit
Very characteristic, the coffee bean chain is made up of links which look like small, fairly bulky beans, connected to each other by small rings. This type of chain can be quite heavy if the grains are full or semi-full.
Popcorn Mesh
Original but not very flexible, the popcorn mesh is a succession of small, very tight grains. The popcorn chain is fragile to twists and other bends.
The types of mesh most at risk of breaking.
Besides popcorn, here are the types of knitwear that we do not recommend wearing on a daily basis. These chain links can obviously make very beautiful jewelry but it is advisable to use them for special events and to take great care of them. These chains should not be twisted or bent.
