What is the difference between an engagement ring and a wedding ring?

While the answer may seem obvious to some people, others walk into our jewellery store and ask us the question. So here are the differences between an engagement ring and a wedding ring .

The engagement and proposal

Before you can get married, you have to propose to your loved one. Traditionally, the proposal is made by offering an engagement ring and in the case of a union between a man and a woman, it is the man who offers it to his sweetheart. I say traditionally because today there are many possibilities. If she says yes to this charming proposal, she will then wear the ring on the fourth finger of her left hand. Why this particular finger? This custom is said to date back to ancient times when it was believed that a vein ran from this point to the heart, a fact that is now denied, but nevertheless the reason why.

The diamond ring

It was not until the 20th century that the diamond solitaire became the most popular type of engagement ring for consumers thanks to a well-orchestrated advertising campaign by De Beers, the world's largest diamond manufacturer. This popularity peaked in the 1980s when over 80% of engaged women in the West wore a diamond on their finger. Over time, customs have changed and the range of diamonds on offer has diversified, but the image of the eternity of diamonds is still very much part of the collective imagination. Precious stones such as rubies, sapphires and emeralds are also popular for engagement rings.

Engagement and wedding rings

The first engagement ring is said to have appeared in ancient times. It was a simple iron ring to show that we belong to another person. Wedding rings, commonly known as wedding bands, also date from this period. Christian marriage would have adopted it in the 9th century and simplified its shape to emphasise the spiritual character of the object. Since then, both spouses have exchanged rings at the end of the wedding ceremony. The round shape of the ring symbolises an eternal union, without beginning or end, a promise of boundless love and commitment. Usually cast in white or yellow gold, the wedding ring is much more sober than the engagement ring, even if some precious stones are sometimes set in it. The woman's wedding ring is placed next to the engagement ring on the ring finger of the left hand. For the man, the wedding ring is a relatively simple goldband . The more daring can set a few precious stones in it. The man also wears it on the ring finger of the left hand.

The man's band

It is a much simpler decision for a man who only needs one band to celebrate the sacrament of marriage. Some jewellery stores stand out by offering original designs. This is the case of Flamme en rose with the "The adventurers" collection.

Wedding ring or love ring

Today, especially in Quebec, many couples make a commitment to each other without celebrating a marriage, whether religious or civil. They own common property, share their daily lives and sometimes have children. The exchange of love rings between two people is a gesture that is just as symbolic as marriage and you should not hesitate to make this project a reality. Our role at Flamme en rose is to accompany you in the important moments of your life, whether or not you are married.
